Battle of Antietam
On the morning of September 17, Union armies mounted a powerful assault on Lee’s left flank that began the Battle of Antietam. This was the single bloodiest day in American military history. Repeated Union attacks, and equally vicious Confederate attacks, going back and forth across the battlefield. Even though the Union had numerical advantage, Stonewall Jackson’s forces could hold their ground on this bloody morning. Towards the middle of the battlefield, Union attacks against the South would get into the Confederate center after a difficult struggle for this amazing position on the battlefield. Unfortunately, the Union army had a temporal advantage in the center. At an incredibly crucial moment, a division arrived and counterattacked, driving back the South and saving the day for the Army of Northern Virginia. Even through this Lee committed his entire army to destroy McClellan. The Northern General McClellan sent in less than Lee's forces. McClellan then approached Lee but, this failed to give Lee any threat and Lee then turned the battle around on McClellans forces. Lee continued to pound the Union forces. This battle is considered a draw to both sides but, the Union forces claimed it as a victory for them.
